Fundraiser For One of Our Own

I’m not sure how many know this, but one of the instructors of the Asheville Music School has experienced a house fire this last week. I’m just finding out yesterday myself. Last Saturday morning Delia Lytle’s house burned. The damage is quite bad. Her son Aiden was at home with two younger siblings when an electrical fire broke out. Fortunately, he managed to get everyone out safely. Unfortunately, he had lost quite a few musical instruments and amplifiers. WLOS ran a story here.

Anne Coombs has organized a fundraiser by The Rock Academy for the family on Friday (next Friday) Feb. 3rd. from 7 to 8pm at Tressa’s. For any and all who can come out. Aiden has in the past been a student of the Rock Academy and if I understand correctly it’s the Saturday morning class that he was in which will be performing.

Justin Watt (AMS Percussion instructor) will be playing (today!!) Friday, Jan. 27th, 7-9:30 p.m., with the Bill Gerhardt Trio (Bill Gerhardt/Justin Watt and Mike Holstein) at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in the Biltmore Village. This is looking to become a somewhat steady Friday night thing. Come stop by the bar, listen, have a drink and get some great food from their affordable bar menu.

Also this Sunday, Jan. 29th, noon-2:30 p.m., the Like Mind Trio (Justin Watt, Matthew Richmond and Mike Holstein) are playing the Sunday Bruch at the Altamont Theatre downtown on 18 Church Street. This is a great weekly happening which features different regional and national acts. There is a $10 cover charge but you get light brunch type foods, coffee and the greatest spot in town to hear music. There is also a “rumor” that Chuck Lichtenberger might be sitting in on a few tunes, so come on out if you can.

Nationally known teacher/piano clinician, pianist & “educainment” facilitator Deborah Belcher inspires & leads these group adventures into the joy of music-making using her Laugh & Learn approach & accessible, user-friendly materials. Discover keyboard basics & music fundamentals in a light-hearted format that includes observation, discussion, experimentation, & generous review for skill development & understanding.

We would like to take a moment to express once more a deep gratitude for all of the well wishes, condolences, prayers, thoughts and help that has been sent our way directly, indirectly and in unexpected ways over this last week. There is no way that we can begin to count the many kind thoughts that have been expressed. It is truly a humbling experience.

More Sorrow than one Week can Contain

Last Saturday left our community with more sorrow than the passing of Paul Thorpe. Saturday afternoon there was a car accident that claimed the life of a talented young violinist, Emily Eliot-Gaines. I mentioned her at our faculty meeting Monday morning and a couple of our instructors have had her as a student. Another instructors son was dating her and she was very close to their family.

This weekend of course, (Saturday December 10th at 1PM) is the memorial service for Paul Thorpe.

I would like you to remember the family of Emily Eliot-Gaines as well and keep in mind that a memorial service for her will be next Saturday, December 17th at 3PM. This service will also be held at the Unitarian Church.

Grief Counseling

We have scheduled a couple of times for grief counseling at the downtown location. We have had a very generous offer of this service. This is specifically for instructors and students of Paul (and families). I have just sent out emails to the instructors and students families about this. If for some reason you have not received information and would like to, please call the school at 828-252-6244 and we will give you the details.

Passing along a message from Paige Gilchrist, the mother of one of Paul’s students. The service will be 1PM Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville, 1 Edwin Place, Asheville , NC 28801

The Asheville Music School community has been invited to provide sweet finger foods for the reception following Paul’s service. We need 15 platters (each to include 20 servings) of home-baked cookies, muffins, bars, etc. Only items that can be eaten without plates and utensils, please.
